Indirect determination of yarn thickness

(6/7/2010 18:00)

The hairiness and the peculiar shape of the ring-spun yarns cross-section prevent the direct determination of yarn thickness as well the yarn diameter. A recently developed method aims at the indirect measurement of yarn thickness using a specially designed frame that can be adapted on commercially existing fabric thickness testing devices.
The results of microscopically subjective yarn thickness measurement of various yarn samples supported the derivation of linear regression equations. The application of these equations for the indirect determination of yarn thickness using the new method presented very satisfactory results. The knowledge of the yarn thickness-diameter will assist the textile technologists who deal with mathematical models for the prediction of the properties of the produced fabrics.
