Extensive consumer research has shown that comfort and superior functional performance of clothing have become the most important attributes demanded by modern consumers, especially under dynamic wear situations. As modern consumers demand personal comfort and functional performance of fashion products, CAD for fashion design alone cannot satisfy the needs of manufacturers to develop functional and comfortable products that can meet the requirements of consumers. However, CAD for functional engineering design has not been well developed. One of the major reasons is that the physics involved in textiles and clothing are extremely complex. Sound scientific understanding and advanced computing simulation technologies are essential requirements for developing advanced engineering design technology for and textile and apparel products. This paper reports the latest development of advanced computing simulation technology of the physical and mechanical behavior of clothing during wear and illustrates how advanced science and technology can be utilized to create innovative textile products by computer generated images and movies.
