The alkaline hydrolysis of poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) fabrics was carried out at elevated temperature in aqueous solution and methanolic solution of sodium hydroxide, respectively.
The effect of heat treatment of the PTT fabrics at different temperature on the characteristics of hydrolysis reaction was investigated. The heat treatment temperatures were chosen between 100℃ and 160℃ and the change of macrostructure of the fiber caused by the heat treatment was analyzed with relation to the result of hydrolysis. The kinetics of hydrolysis reaction in each reaction medium was suggested and some reaction parameters were determined using theoretical kinetic equations. Some properties of the hydrolyzed PTT fabrics were also evaluated with instrumental analysis and microscopic observation.
