The Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS) said
textile and clothing exports rose to US$9.32bn in the period from July
2009 to May 2010, up from $8.73bn in the prior year”.The value of
readymade garment exports rose 3.7% to $1.16bn, while knitwear shipments
edged up just 0.9% to $1.59bn ..In terms of volume, shipments of
readymade garments slipped 6.4% while knitwear exports were down 5.4% ..The
value of shipments of raw cotton and cotton yarn climbed 134.6% and
28.2% respectively, the data showed ..The figures showed that
textile and garment exports accounted for 53% of Pakistan’s $17.6bn in
total exports during the 11-month period ..In the month of May,
textile and clothing exports were up 5.7% year-on-year to $875m ..The
rise in exports comes despite the industry being hit by protest rallies
against ongoing price hikes and a shortage of cotton yarns in the
domestic market, as well as widespread interruptions to electricity and
gas supplies .
