Considering the demand for acreage from competing crops, there was an inherent constraint in expanding the area under exclusive cotton cultivation. Wastelands should be brought under short and medium-staple cotton growth. For the last two years, the issue of using rice fallow lands from States such as Tamil Nadu, Orissa and West Bengal had been debated. However it had not progressed due to the lack of suitable varieties for cultivation in such lands. In Addition to one area of concern for the sector was that of a large number of varieties and hybrids being recommended for cultivation in various cotton growing States. Cotton growers in any particular village should be encouraged to grow only one variety. This would bring down the admixture levels.Source: The Hindu.com”
