Hit by the appreciation of rupee vis-à-vis dollar and long cool climate affecting traditional summer wear export from the country and some Least Developed Countries and countries having preferential trading arrangements in the US are getting duty-free treatment on import of garments, affecting Indian exports. .

Apparel exports to USA saw a decline of 15.95 per cent in terms of quantity and 23.63 per cent in terms of value. Exports to USA during January 2004, stood at 34 million pieces valued at 191.6 million dollar, according to data released by Apparel Export Promotion Council. .

However, exports to European Union witnessed a rise of 25.31 per cent in value terms while there was a marginal decrease of 0.38 per cent in quantity terms at 407.9 million dollar and 105.4 million pieces. .

Exports to Portugal, Greece, Finland, UK, Italy, Benelux, Ireland, France, Denmark, Germany and Spain showed an increase while to Austria and Sweden declined in terms of value. Garment export to Portugal showed the highest increase of 100 per cent in terms of value. .

Exports to Canada during January, 2004 registered a decrease of 30.12 per cent in terms of quantity and 21.10 in terms of value. During the period under review, exports amounted to 5.8 million pieces valued at 18.7 million dollar. .

Garment exports during the first ten months of the financial year 2003-04 amounted to 930.2 million pieces valued at 3772.8 million dollar representing a decrease of 3.61 per cent in terms of quantity and increase of 4.82 per cent in terms of value compared to the same period of previous financial year. .
