Silk chiefs in India have revealed a steep rise in four month fabric and made-up exports to the US has helped offset plunging demand in the EU.
Figures from the Indian Silk Export Promotion Council show silk exports to the US surged 36 per cent year-on-year with industry bosses saying they expect total exports to climb eight per cent to $450 million in fiscal 2003.
They added exports of silk ready-made garments to the US fell around 15 per cent in the March to July period but are optimistic of reversing that trend and achieving their export aim of $1 billion by fiscal 2007.
