The Corporate Council on Africa (CCA) is to team up with Material World, the annual trade show for fabric-related industries in the Americas, to promote sourcing opportunities on the African continent.
CCA will bring a delegation of 10 African executives to the show under its State Department funded AGOA Professional Development Program. One of the delegates, Catherine Boch, is the managing director of a clothing company in Lesotho that produces jeans, chinos and various types of trousers, and exports over 220,000 units each year. Another exhibitor, Ladha Hussein, is the owner of the Tanzanian company, Ubungo Mill/Rafia Bags, employing over 2000 people and yielding $10 million annually.
The African textile and apparel industry has profited since the January 2001 enactment of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). As the first US trade bill to offer sub-Saharan African countries trade preference, AGOA gives 36 beneficiary countries duty and quota-free access to the US market for nearly 2,000 products. The bill offers particular benefits to the African textile and apparel industry, as it is the only US trade bill to give duty or quota-free access to these products.
The Material World Trade Show will take place Monday, October 7 through Wednesday, October 9, 2002 at the Miami Beach Convention Center.
