This paper examines the effect of eight different retting treatments on decorticated hemp skins. These treatments have been applied to other bast fibres such as ramie, flax and kenaf. The decorticated hemp skins were batch retted and opened twice using a Shirley cotton trash separator. The opened fibres were assessed for fibre fineness and fineness variation using an optical method. Colour and handle evaluation was also conducted on the degummed fibers. The results were then used to evaluate the retting efficiency of these treatments on decorticated hemp skins.
